Subject: [IML] IFW: Brush Formats
To Gerwood Stewart re your message of Sat, 2 May 1998:
>>>What image format does Imagine use for brushes
In the ADD BRUSH menu, under File Types, it should list all the supported
formats. The version of IFW that I have does not seem to support PSD or
IFF, so you'll need to try something else. A 24-bit file will probably be
your best bet, however in some of the formats, lower bit planes (8-bit,
4-bit) may work as well.
In IFW terminology, ``Brushes'' refers just to ordinary image files, not
the kind of arbitrarily shaped brushes or clips you use in some paint
programs. (Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong about this.)

Subject: [IML] quest:file format
I have a question regarding image formats
I use bit maps as my main (just because)
in order to post some of my work to the web I have to convert them to either
GIF or JPEG or some other format
so the question is which is the best and what is the diff
also I will often render an image then resize it in PSP 5 is there a format
that is better to use for resizing images
or does it not matter ?
thanks

Chris, I'm so glad you bothered to learn the difference between GIF and
JPEG. These days, I go batty when someone posts a screen shot as an
artifact-riddled 130K JPEG, when a 20K GIF would've been a pixel-perfect
copy of the image.
Here are two URLs that explain when to use GIF vs. JPEG:
http://www.builder.com/Graphics/Design/ss3.html
(click on the subtopics to "graphics" in the navigation bar)
http://www.glover.com/ss/extra02.html
(A great site, in every respect)

Use GIF for 256 colours or less. and Jpeg for loadsa colour. i.e.
24bit.
For example. If you Jpeg a black and white line drawing, which is just
2 colours, black and white; It will end up looking like it's got inky
fingerprints all over it. Also, the jpeg, at say 80% would be a larger
file size than the same image as a Gif.
For 24bit. Jpegs will be smaller than er. . . Gif doesn't support
24bit, but a 24bit PNG will be bigger than a Jpeg, but lossless . . .
and just to confuse myself, and anyone else trying to decode this,
you could also use ljpeg (lossless Jpeg). I only have a Loader for
this format, so I can't say how it compares to a lossless PNG with
level 9 compression 8]
